Dragon Ball Z Kakarot went on sale for Black Friday and I had to pick it up because they had recently surprised drop Dragon Ball Card Warriors into the game. I don’t think they have actually released one of these for any system since the Game Boy advance! For 23.99 I couldn’t pass it up!
Now I got this for PC, and the first thing I had to take note of is that its without a doubt a console port of the game. Using the mouse and keyboard is practically impossible. Luckily I have my trusted wired Xbox controller to get by with. (Side note I also had to use the controller for a purchase of Jedi: Fallen Order; another game I would recommend.) Trust me, you dont one to play on PC without one. Get yourself one by clicking the image below:
I spent a large amount of time messing around with trying to use the keyboard an mouse only to finally give in to the ease of use that the controller provided.
I think they may have made this game as a prototype for a mobile app because the login bonus is a little obnoxious for a “console” game. I had to click through like 4 menus just to get to the main card game title screen, which is bad enough because you start at the screen for the main game so you got to click through to get to the card game right off the bat! If you want to quit back to desktop, get ready for a bunch of menu jumping as well. My suggestion is to go into graphics and set it to window mode if you are playing on PC, got to make room for an easy exit!
The Store
First thing I had to check out was the store.
THEY HAVE PLAYING MATS!!! I have played a lot of these card games before, I am a pretty avid MTG Arena player and of course I played Hearthstone back in the day. Hey, I get buying sleeves, I mean the same card backs get boring after a while, but playing mats!!! … and look at the ones at the top…
I don’t know what 2700 dragon ball coins converts to in real money, but I got a felling I don’t want to find out. In real life, I love play mats, I have two sitting on my computer work station right now, but on the computer I though the playing field that the game provides should be diverse enough to counteract the need for playmats. The card sleeves don’t get much better…
What is with all the triangles??? They literally come in 8 colors. Don’t get me wrong, see Shenron down in the right corner? That is the type of sleeve I was expecting… and I would understand if people spent money on that, but colored triangles? Why are the good sleeves not at the top? Take a closer look and you will notice that Shenron costs Platinum coins, uh guess that costs more than silver coins… again I do not want to find out.
What is going on with the card store? Almost every single online TCG I have played has allowed for the purchasing of single cards using in game currency. Here you get pack summons? Please, I beg you, after you buy this game, do not waste any additional money here.
Battle
No seriously that’s what its called. Lets do a training battle and see how this goes..
I guess I am using the starter deck. For some reason it gave me the option to do some editing to the deck, but I click past this, the enemy isnt ready to see Gohan’s True Power!
I do like this exchange hand mechanic. It is kind of like Hearthstone where you the mana is a slow build up by each turn, so it is great to drop these larger cards out of your hand in the early game.
Turn 1 I have to drop Mr. Popo… I think I am going to lose already. But hey, at least I don’t have a saibeman like the computer. Cards do have summoning sickness, which is fairly in line with other TCG’s
Turn 2 I drop Cui… wait who? I have never heard of this guy.. maybe they are giving minions names now? Mr. Popo wreaks some havok and I end the turn.
Now I know a character. I drop Android 19 and then proceed to lay the smack down on these two random minions. When I say random… one guys name is “Planetary Warrior A” and the other guy is “Planetary Warrior D”. Even Mr. Popo cant lose here… and goodbye Cui.. I hath known you so long.
Turn 4 I drop… ANOTHER CUI.. who called the dragon balls out and wished this fool back??? In all actuality I up to 4 amnda now and I could have dropped this golden fighter special attack that kicks one of these mustached fools in the face but after Cui showed up, I knew it was meant to be.
Welp.. Cui didnt last long.. Turn 5 and now I get to show you that special kick, just in time to knock Raditz off the field. Lets be serious now… I can’t be having the computer have named characters on the field when I don’t, even if it is Raditz.
Turn 6. I have always liked Android 17 for his attitude, and he didn’t disappoint here. After the computer dropped down an Android 19, I dropped 17 and his audio says “Come at me already”. Keep talking smack Android 17, we about to back it up. (I thougt it was Piccolo card at first, you can barely see Android 17 in that picture.
Turn 7 the computer drops a Android 20 and then I drop a Super Saiyan Goku 3. Call Vegas… what are the chances of the computer winning right now? If I have the starter deck, what crappy deck do they have. Take note of the top of image above. I got 4 cards in hand and I only see one for them. Android 17 makes quick work of 20… as he should.. and I end the turn.
Turn 8. If I am going to be honest, the goal here is to put Gohan on the playing field. I mean this site is called TrueGohan, it has a lot to live up to. So I could have dropped another Android 17 card and gone for the win, but that doesn’t bring out Gohan. This is a starter deck, I did not look through it one bit, but there has to be a Gohan in here. So in a act of a desperation I played some card that gives me a random card out of my deck that is of a lower power than my enemies highest card. I got this Krillin, Yamcha, Tien card, power 3, yeah they aint getting no respect in this game. If you got to combine all three of them to make power 3 then they aren’t going to be much of a factor. Then I dropped a random Goten and Mr. Popo made his triumphant return. I destroyed the computers cards and passed the turn.
Turn 9. The computer is at max health, but they have no cards on the field. Yet I still don’t have enough to finish them off, thanks a lot Mr. Popo. I knock them to 5000 and end the turn. They are under 9000????
Turn 10. The computer has card draw problems and I still don’t have a Gohan. Welp, guess he is about to die. Due to my massive card advantage I have no choice but to finish the job. BUT THAT IS NO FUN.. lets keep the game going. I attack with no one. I tell the computer my mercy knows no bounds and I pass the turn. Nicely the computer reminds me that I could have attacked with at least five characters and I hit the continue button to pass on.
Turn 11. Alas no Gohan, but I do get a cell form 2. Hey he got killed by Gohan, so seems like a good enough place to end the computers suffering. The cell card is actually really cool, when he comes in he does damage to the enemy’s character and then after he lands on the field as a character of his own. I am going to want him in all my decks, seems good to me. Super Saiyan Goku 3 swings for 15k damage, so yeah.. I won
Let me know if you like this post and if you want to see more like it. I mean come on we have to get a Gohan on the field of battle. I am having fun with the game, but I am a sucker for this thing, I mean come on I built a blog about dragon ball z, but you read this far, so you probably are too. So if you want to try it for your self then buy it here.
